Plot summary
Charlie waits tables in a restaurant, where he is clumsy and the service is poor: he works out what a diner owes by looking at the food on the man's suit, and that diner is the hot-tempered Mr. Stout. He spends his lunch break at a nearby roller rink, where he skates well. At the rink he meets a girl, and when Mr. Stout presses his unwanted attentions on her, Charlie comes to her aid. Grateful, the girl invites him to a skating party, and Charlie attends in top hat and tails. Among the guests he finds Mr. Stout again, and meets Mrs. Stout.

- Charlie Chaplin's surprising roller-skating skill in The Rink came from his vaudeville days: touring with Fred Karno's pantomime troupe, he performed a roller-skating skit where he took comedic falls and knocked other skaters over.
- In 1932 Amedee Van Beuren of Van Beuren Studios bought Chaplin's Mutual comedies for $10,000 each, added music by Gene Rodemich and Winston Sharples and sound effects, and re-released them through RKO Radio Pictures; Chaplin had no legal recourse to stop it.
