Biography

Eric Campbell was an English actor who was born in Sale and became a key member of Charlie Chaplin's troupe of players. He started out in small local theaters in Scotland and Wales, playing melodrama, where the impresario Fred Karno spotted him and brought him to London for slapstick comedy. Campbell moved to New York in 1914 and built a reputation on the American stage; in 1916 Chaplin saw him in a Broadway play and invited him to Hollywood for the Mutual films. His first appearance with Chaplin was The Floorwalker (1916), and he went on to play the towering bully and comic foil to the Little Tramp, a part he refined across their films together. His best known role was probably the brutal bully of Easy Street (1917). Chaplin also lent him to Mary Pickford for Amarilly of Clothes-Line Alley. He died in 1917.
