Plot summary
Charlie, the Tramp, has no job and no home beyond a vacant lot. He lines up for work, but the jobs run out before he reaches the head of the line. He tries to take food from a lunch cart, and a police officer gives chase; he escapes by rolling back and forth under a fence. He saves Scraps, a stray dog, from other strays, and the two become partners in stealing food. Charlie hides Scraps in his trousers to enter a cabaret, where Edna sings and keeps the clientele company against her wish. Charlie tries to cheer her up. With no money to pay, he is put out.
