Biography

Edna Purviance was an American performer of the silent screen who became Charlie Chaplin's regular leading lady. Born in Paradise Valley, Nevada, in 1895, she was brought up in Lovelock. Working as a stenographer in San Francisco, she was noticed by a talent scout while Chaplin needed a leading lady for A Night Out; he worried she was too serious for comic roles, but she got the part. In eight years she appeared in over 30 Chaplin productions, among them The Kid (1921). A Woman of Paris (1923) gave her a first leading part and marked her final credited role for Chaplin; the movie was not a hit and effectively finished her film career. She made two more films, Sea Gulls, which Chaplin never released, and the French picture Éducation de Prince (1927), and later had small parts in Monsieur Verdoux and Limelight.
