Biography

Albert Austin was an English actor, director, and script writer whose career was tied to Charlie Chaplin. Born in Birmingham, he worked in music halls before he and Chaplin, both then with Fred Karno's troupe, traveled to the United States in 1910. His painted handlebar mustache and acerbic manner were well known. He became part of Chaplin's stock company, usually playing supporting parts as a foil and serving as assistant director. He appeared in Chaplin's Mutual Film Corporation comedies, and his best known performance may have been in the short The Pawnshop (1916). He helped Chaplin develop the plot of The Adventurer (1917), and screen credit as a collaborator came his way only once, on City Lights (1931), where he had brief uncredited roles. He later had the lead in Mary Pickford's Suds (1920), appearing without his comic mustache, and after sound came in he shifted toward writing scripts, directing, and performing, mostly in short comedies. He died in 1953.
