Plot summary
Stranded in Paris, American showgirl Eve Peabody has no money and only the evening gown she is wearing. She talks Tibor Czerny, a Hungarian cab driver, into driving her to nightclubs in search of work, then slips away from the dinner and the apartment he offers her. Sheltering from the rain, she slips into a black tie concert and, caught out as a gatecrasher, is drawn into a bridge game by Marcel, where she meets Helene Flammarion and the wealthy Jacques Picot and calls herself Madame Czerny. Helene's husband Georges claims to recognize her as a baroness and by morning has installed her at the Ritz with trunks, a car and a chauffeur, asking her to encourage Jacques and so end his wife's affair.
