Plot summary
Jean Waddington and Kitty Flanders meet as girls at a boarding school where their divorced parents have left them. Ted Larrabee, whose parents are divorced too, climbs the school wall, and the three promise each other they will never divorce. Years later, Ted and Kitty have become friends in America. Jean comes back from Europe, and she and Ted are drawn to each other, which upsets Kitty. At a party Kitty explains to her lover, Prince Ludovico de Saxe, that marriage is out of the question because he has no money, and she turns her attention to Ted, who is rich. Ted asks Jean to marry him, but knowing Ted's father was unfaithful to his wife, Jean wants him to prove himself first. Ted opens an architectural business designing bridges.

- Paramount publicists deemed Frank Lloyd's film commercially nonviable with one million dollars already invested, but Josef von Sternberg, then an assistant director at the studio, declined to rewrite its intertitles and instead offered producer B. P. Schulberg to reshoot half of it in three days.
- Because every stage on the Paramount lot was occupied, the remake of Children of Divorce was shot in a large tent erected for the purpose, with portions of the old set brought out of storage.
