Biography

Clara Bow was an American actress who rose to fame in silent films and later made the change to sound pictures. Born in Brooklyn, she won the Fame and Fortune acting contest in 1921 and soon began working in Hollywood. After a period with Preferred Pictures, she signed with Paramount and became known for flapper roles. Her role as a shopgirl in It (1927) brought her the nickname The It Girl. Her hit films included Mantrap (1926), It (1927), and Wings (1927), the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture. In 1927 she also appeared in Children of Divorce and Hula. She was the top box-office draw in 1928 and 1929. Bow left acting in 1933, and her final film, Hoop-La, came out that year.
