Biography

Hamilton Camp, a British-born actor and singer, moved to the United States as a child and began acting in films and onstage in 1946, when he was twelve. He launched a folk singing career at the 1960 Newport Folk Festival and recorded with Bob Gibson before writing Pride of Man, a 1964 song recorded by Quicksilver Messenger Service, Gram Parsons, and Gordon Lightfoot. He made his Broadway debut in 1964 in the revue The Committee, guest-starred on many television shows, and balanced music and acting for decades. On screen, he played Bentley in Heaven Can Wait (1978), voiced the robot L in Starcrash (1978), and became Disney's voice of Merlin. His animation credits included Greedy Smurf and Harmony Smurf, Fenton Crackshell on DuckTales, Count Dracula in Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf (1988), and Turk Tarpit in The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones (1987). He died in 2005; Hard Four (2007) was his final film.
