Plot summary

Kerchak leads the gorilla family in the jungle. Kala is his mate and the adoptive mother of Tarzan, the human boy who was raised among the gorillas after his parents died. Tarzan runs slower than the young gorillas his age, and every attempt to prove himself ends in chaos that disappoints Kerchak. He also fears the Zugor, a monster the animals believe lives on Dark Mountain, and he worries that his mischief will bring harm to Kala. When the family crosses a canyon, an accident leaves Kala believing her son is dead, and the other gorillas speak of his end as fitting. Hearing them, Tarzan decides the family would do better without him and slips away alone.
