Plot summary
Word reaches Clay O'Mara in Denver, where he works as a railroad surveyor, that his father and his teenage brother have been shot at the O'Mara ranch. He rides to Santiago, where nobody knows who fired the shots. The Reverend Moorehead talks him out of revenge, but Clay makes his own inquiries and asks Sheriff Fred Kenyon for a deputy's badge so that he can investigate. Kenyon refuses at first. The lawyer Tom Meredith then proposes a different errand: that Clay ride to Diablo and arrest the gunman Whitey Kincade, who has no connection to the killings. Kenyon's niece Laurie is engaged to Meredith.
