Plot summary
Stella Star and Akton work as smugglers, and the Imperial Space Police, with the robot sheriff Elle and Chief Thor at the head of the pursuit, chase them until they jump into hyperspace. Emerging from the jump, they find an escape pod holding a confused survivor of a starship attack. The police follow their trail, catch them and convict them of piracy, which brings life sentences on separate worlds. Stella breaks out of prison, is caught again, and learns her sentence has been canceled; she is brought to a ship in orbit, where Akton waits. The Emperor of the Galaxy has a commission: Count Zarth Arn has hidden a weapon of immense power, and the mothership and two escape pods are still missing, one of them perhaps carrying his only son. Clemency is offered in return.
