Plot summary
On a space station in 4038, Steve Armstrong loses his job after a brawl with an alien patron named Vang. Quinn, who manages a small stable of Arena fighters, is impressed that a human beat one of her men and offers him a contract. Steve turns her down, sure that humans have no place in the competition, and plans to go back to Earth. His friend Shorty gambles in an underground casino to raise the fare, and when the raid comes he pockets the cash. Rogor, a crime boss who manages the top fighters, and his enforcer Weezil catch him at it and hold him for ransom. To pay the debt Steve signs with Quinn, and he enters the Arena as the first human contender in fifty years.
