Plot summary
In 1870s Pittsburgh, Mary Rafferty lives with her disabled father Pat and her sister Kate Shannon. Despite Pat's objection, she takes a housemaid job in the home of William Scott, the steel mill owner whose mill caused Pat's disability. On her first day, William's son Paul arrives from London, and she meets him at a dinner that evening. Paul wants to modernize the mill's furnace; his friend Jim Brennan brings a model to Mary's home, but Pat makes him leave. Mary goes outside, upset with her father, and her feelings for Paul start to grow. When Constance Scott attempts to elope with the Earl of Moulton, Mary stops her. Clarissa Scott then invites Mary on a cruise to Boston, where Mary and Paul kiss. Their romance is complicated by Paul's engagement and a bitter labor dispute at the mill.
