Earle Hodgins

Biography

Earle Hodgins was an American actor who built a long career in stock theater before moving into film and television. Born in Salt Lake City, he performed with companies including the Ralph Cloninger troupe, Seattle's Siegel Stock company, and the Allen Players at Vancouver's Empress Theatre. His screen credits numbered more than 330 films and television programs from 1932 to 1963, and he became especially known for fast-talking con men. Much of that work was in westerns, including The Lone Ranger, Judge Roy Bean, The Cisco Kid, The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, Rawhide, Maverick, Lawman, The Rifleman, Cheyenne, Have Gun Will Travel, Gunsmoke, and Hopalong Cassidy. On Gunsmoke he had a recurring role as the town judge and also played the title part in Uncle Oliver. In 1959 he appeared as Mr. Fane on Lawman, and in the 1960 to 1961 season he played the aging ranch wrangler Lonesome in three episodes of Guestward, Ho!
