Andy Clyde
Biography
Andy Clyde was a Scottish and American actor who worked in films and television for roughly 45 years. Born in Blairgowrie and Rattray, Scotland, he was the son of a theatrical actor and producer. He began on the stage, touring Scotland at 19 and first visiting the United States in 1912 with the Graham Moffat Players. In 1920 he returned to join Mack Sennett's studio, breaking into silent films in 1921 with a debut in On a Summer Day. For Columbia Pictures he made 79 comedy shorts between 1934 and 1956, becoming known for an old man characterization. He was California Carlson in the Hopalong Cassidy films, including Three Men from Texas (1940), Doomed Caravan (1941), Hoppy Serves a Writ (1943) and Bar 20 (1943). He also had supporting roles in Million Dollar Legs (1932), The Little Minister (1934) and Annie Oakley (1935), and on television he was a recurring cast member of Lassie and The Real McCoys.

A first
Clyde found success with an old man character in his short comedies, wearing a gray wig and mustache for the rest of that career. The character lasted so long he grew into it, and he starred in short comedies for 32 years, 1924 to 56, longer than any other actor.
First role
At 19, Clyde toured Scotland with Durward Lely & Company, where he took the part of Connor Martin in The Wearin' o' the Green, a romantic Irish musical costume drama.
Own stunts
Clyde's comic timing was so economical that he could get a laugh by merely lifting an eyebrow, shuddering slightly, or muttering "My, my, my."
