Frank Gorshin

Biography

Frank Gorshin was an American actor, comedian and impressionist who was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and studied drama at the Carnegie Tech School of Drama. He began as an impressionist while still a teenager, then served in the Army as an entertainer, and from 1956 on he worked steadily in films, including Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957), Bells Are Ringing (1960), Where the Boys Are (1960), That Darn Cat! (1965) and Skidoo (1968). He was best known as the Riddler on ABC's Batman and was nominated for an Emmy for the part, also playing the villain in the 1966 theatrical film, and he headlined Las Vegas showrooms as an impressionist. His later stage work included Jimmy and Guys and Dolls on Broadway and a one-man Broadway show about George Burns, Say Goodnight Gracie, which earned a Tony nomination.

In 1951, while still in high school, Gorshin won a Pittsburgh talent contest, and the prize was a one-week booking at Carousel, Jackie Heller's nightclub in New York.
A change of course
Gorshin entered the United States Army through the draft in 1953 and was posted to Germany. Attached to Special Services there, he worked as an entertainer for a year and a half.
