Plot summary
Julius is being dropped by California University for failing to meet its academic eligibility requirements, so he decides to give his band, Hail Caesar, his full attention. He rehearses with his friends Annie and Wlad until his dog interrupts them by attacking the mailman. Then he picks up his girlfriend, Buffer, and at her party her father, Mr. Bidwell, tells Julius plainly that he dislikes him and offers money if he will stay away from her. Julius refuses and says he loves Buffer. Bidwell proposes a wager instead: earn $100,000 within six months and he may keep dating her; fail and he must leave her alone forever. Bidwell also hands him a job at his pencil eraser factory.
