Plot summary

In eighteenth-century Scotland, Clan Glourie feuds with Clan McLaggan. The Glourie is too old and ill to march against the English, so he sends his only son, Murdoch, who would sooner court the lassies than fight. Outnumbered by the McLaggans, Murdoch hides behind a barrel of gunpowder, and a cannonball fired in error kills him. Stranded in Limbo for cowardice, he is condemned to walk Glourie Castle until a McLaggan kneels and concedes that one Glourie can beat fifty of his clan. Two centuries later, Peggy Martin, a rich American businessman's daughter, arranges the castle's purchase from Donald Glourie, who is deep in debt. Donald is outraged that his ancestral home will be taken apart and rebuilt in Florida, though he is drawn to Peggy. On the battlements she meets the ghost of Murdoch and takes him for Donald.
