Plot summary
Scandals at the Sylvanian embassy in Paris, among them an affair with the ambassador's wife, bring Count Alfred Renard orders to return home and report to Queen Louise. Louise rules Sylvania in her own right, and her subjects press her about whom she will marry, though a husband could be only a prince consort. Alfred's dossier intrigues rather than offends her, so she invites him to dinner while she settles on a fitting punishment. Their romance advances to marriage, and Alfred, though doubtful, promises to obey the queen he loves, then grows restive in the consort's role of little to do.

- In one scene two couples sing the same song alternately; to do it with the technology of the day, Ernst Lubitsch had two sets built with an off-camera orchestra between them and directed both scenes simultaneously, letting him cut back and forth in editing, something unheard of at the time.
