Biography

Edward Andrews was an American actor who worked on stage, film, and television and became one of the most recognizable character actors of the 1950s through the 1980s. Born in Griffin, Georgia, and raised in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Wheeling, he won a small walk-on part in a stock theater show at 12, made his stage debut at 21 in 1935, and reached Broadway that same year. His film career took off in his forties, and his white hair and horn-rimmed glasses helped him land officious types, including ornery bosses and cagey businessmen. He appeared in The Phenix City Story (1955), The Harder They Fall (1956), Elmer Gantry (1960), The Absent-Minded Professor (1961), The Thrill of It All (1963), Send Me No Flowers (1964), Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), and Avanti! (1972). On television he guest-starred widely and co-starred on Broadside from 1964 to 1965. Later films included Sixteen Candles (1984) and Gremlins (1984).
