The United States elects Leslie McCloud its first female president, and she settles into the White House with her husband Thad and their children, Gloria and Peter. The office keeps Leslie busy with Senator Walsh's opposition and with Raphael Valdez Jr., a Central American dictator. Thad, called the president's husband, dislikes the feminine bedroom and office assigned to him and looks for work that matters. Doris Reid Weaver, an international businesswoman who was once Thad's flame and a Radcliffe classmate of Leslie's, visits and offers him the vice presidency of her cosmetics company. Leslie notices Doris's perfume on him that night and confronts him. She also asks Thad to escort Valdez around Washington.
