Plot summary

Ned Brainard is a professor at Medfield College, where his discovery of Flubber, a rubbery substance that bounces, has not yet earned him or the school a cent. The Pentagon has classified the substance as top secret, and the tax office has billed him for money he has never received. Ned pins his hopes on a derivative he calls Flubbergas, which he believes can change the weather. His ray projector brings rain to his kitchen and his garage, but used on real clouds it shatters windows throughout the town. Alonzo P. Hawk, who plans to shut Medfield down, links the broken windows to Ned and offers him a share in a glass company scheme. At home, Ned's wife Betsy is worn down by their finances and jealous of the attention an old high school girlfriend pays her husband.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Walt Disney abhorred sequels, but according to his daughter he made Son of Flubber only because there were unused gags left over from The Absent-Minded Professor.
  • For the climactic football game, the field was built on a Disney studio soundstage with players suspended on wires to pull off the Flubber-powered stunts, and the opposing team was made up of real professional football players rather than actors.
  • Son of Flubber was shot in black and white, the final Disney live-action film to be made that way, although a colorized version of it was released on VHS in 1997.
  • The film's fictional Medfield College setting was reused years later for Disney's Dexter Riley trilogy, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, Now You See Him Now You Don't, and The Strongest Man in the World, all three starring Kurt Russell and Cesar Romero.
