David Cronenberg
Biography
David Cronenberg is a Canadian filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and actor who helped originate the body horror genre, exploring bodily transformation, infection and the connection between mind, body and technology. Born in Toronto, he started with short films and art-house features before the horror films Shivers and Rabid brought him wider attention. He directed the science fiction horror films Scanners, Videodrome (1983) and The Fly (1986), a box office hit, and also made dramas and thrillers. Crash (1996) received the Special Jury Prize at Cannes. His collaborations with Viggo Mortensen include A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method and Crimes of the Future. Seven of his films competed for the Palme d'Or, including The Shrouds. His acting work includes cameos in Into the Night (1985) and major roles in Nightbreed (1990) and Last Night (1998), and he directed the opera The Fly and wrote the novel Consumed.

A role that slipped away
Cronenberg spent close to a year developing a version of Total Recall, but creative differences with producers Dino De Laurentiis and Ronald Shusett led him to leave. Paul Verhoeven eventually made a different version of the film.
