Plot summary
Catherine and James Ballard keep an open marriage, sharing accounts of their encounters outside it to fuel their own. One night while driving home, James loses control and his car meets another head-on. A man in the other car is killed. James's own leg is shattered and held in a steel brace. In the hospital he meets Helen Remington, who was in the other car, and Robert Vaughan, who studies his injuries with great interest. James and Helen begin an affair rooted in the crash they survived, and she brings him to a performance Vaughan has arranged, a restaging of the crash that killed James Dean.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- At the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, jury president Francis Ford Coppola refused to personally hand David Cronenberg the Special Jury Prize for Crash, so someone else presented it.
- The Daily Mail and the Evening Standard ran an aggressive campaign to ban Crash in the United Kingdom, but the BBFC passed it uncut with an 18 rating in March 1997 after a Queen's Counsel, a psychologist and 11 disabled people found no reason to ban it.
- Ted Turner, whose company oversaw U.S. distributor Fine Line Features, would not put Crash out in the United States and pulled it from an October 1996 date. He was morally offended and worried about copycat incidents. It opened in the U.S. in Spring 1997.
- AMC Entertainment posted security guards outside about 30 screens showing Crash to keep minors out, with two guards at its Century City location in Los Angeles, one inside the auditorium and one outside.
- The shooting script was deliberately kept to 77 pages because of budget limits and Cronenberg's wish to shoot slowly and focus microscopically; the smaller budget also made Howard Shore score the film in Toronto instead of London for the first time since Videodrome.
- Cronenberg changed the setting from London in Ballard's novel to Toronto and wrote a new ending, and he rejected a proposed voice-over, asking, "do you want someone to read from the novel?"
