Plot summary
An unexplained calamity has been expected for months and is due at midnight, and in Toronto the rioting has mostly died down. Sandra is scavenging leftovers at a supermarket when her car is vandalized, stranding her in the city. Her husband, Duncan, works at a power company and spends the day assuring customers their gas will keep running. Patrick leaves his family's mock Christmas dinner early, meaning to spend his final hours alone; his best friend Craig spends the day marking off sexual milestones. Sandra turns up at Patrick's door to phone Duncan, and he lets her in. Patrick's old high school friend Menzies drives around giving out tickets to a concert he is playing.

- Don McKellar wrote the screenplay by asking his friends what they would do if they knew the end was coming and basing the script on their answers; he left the cause of the apocalypse unexplained because he did not think that was the point.
- Because overturning a real streetcar would have been too expensive, the filmmakers used computers for the upturned vehicle, and cinematographer Douglas Koch used bleach bypass to give the film sad visuals.
- Shortly before shooting began, Don McKellar learned a Hollywood film called Armageddon was in the works, but he went ahead after hearing the two stories were substantially different.
- At the Genie Awards the film won three prizes, and Don McKellar was effectively competing against himself as the screenwriter of both Last Night and The Red Violin.
- Last Night premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 1998 in the Directors' Fortnight section, and was the first film played in Canada Perspectives at the Toronto International Film Festival.
