Leslie Carlson

Biography

Leslie Carlson was an American actor who spent much of his professional life in Canada. Born in Mitchell, South Dakota, in 1933, he studied at the University of South Dakota and performed in stage plays in the United States and England before moving to Canada in the late 1960s. He began working in film, television, and theater in the early 1970s. Carlson became known for his collaborations with David Cronenberg and Bob Clark, playing memorable roles in Black Christmas (1974) and Deranged (1974), and as a Christmas tree salesman in A Christmas Story (1983). He appeared in four Cronenberg films, including Videodrome (1983) and The Dead Zone, and received a Genie Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Videodrome. His television work included The X-Files, Friday the 13th: The Series, 21 Jump Street, and Road to Avonlea. On stage he won a Dora Award for Valley Song (1996) and performed with the Stratford Festival and Shaw Festival.
