Plot summary
In 1991 Iraq, Jack Starks is shot in the head by a child soldier and presumed dead. He recovers and returns to Vermont in 1992 with amnesia. At a broken-down truck he meets Jackie, a young girl, and her mother Jean Price; Jackie asks for his dog tags and he gives them to her. A driver offers him a ride, a policeman pulls them over, and shots are fired. Jack wakes near the officer's body with the gun beside him and a bullet in him. Because he cannot remember the missing minutes, the court finds him not guilty by reason of insanity and sends him to Alpine Grove, a mental institution for criminals. There Dr. Thomas Becker drugs him, straps him into a jacket and locks him in a morgue drawer, a treatment that sends him forward in time.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Jacket (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Maybury said the film is loosely based on a true story that became a Jack London story: Ed Morrell told London about San Quentin prison's inhumane use of tight straitjackets, and the film shares the title and straitjacket time-travel idea of London's 1915 novel.
- Mark Wahlberg was in talks to play the lead, but by August 2003 he and Paramount had left the project, with Adrien Brody taking over the lead role.
- The script changed during production: the plot thread of the main character's false murder conviction and clearing his name was abandoned, and the setting switched from a prison farm to a psychiatric hospital.
