Plot summary
It is 1848 in Baltimore, and Edgar Allan Poe, who has a drinking problem and no money, writes reviews for the Baltimore Patriot. Emily Hamilton loves him, but Captain Charles Hamilton, her father, despises him. A woman and her twelve-year-old daughter are found dead in a room locked from the inside. Emmett Fields, the detective assigned to the case, discovers a spring hidden in a window that had been nailed shut and remembers a story Poe wrote about a murder in a locked room. When Griswold, a critic of his work, is killed in a way that copies another of Poe's stories, Poe and Fields grasp that the murders follow Poe's tales.
