Plot summary
King Francis II of France is dead, and his widow Mary Stuart, nineteen, leaves France for Scotland to take her throne. Her half brother James Stewart, Earl of Moray, receives her. In England her cousin Elizabeth Tudor rules without a husband or a child, and Mary's claim to the English crown makes her a threat. Many English Catholics regard Mary as England's rightful queen. Mary dismisses the Protestant preacher John Knox from the Scottish court.
