Plot summary
John Glidden, who has built an industrial fortune, is dying and has no one he trusts to leave it to. His relatives want his money, and he does not believe any of his employees could run his companies. So that his will cannot be contested, he decides to give a million dollars to each of eight people chosen from a telephone directory; the first name drawn, John D. Rockefeller, is rejected immediately. Among the recipients are Henry Peabody, a china shop salesman; Violet Smith, who works in a barroom; Eddie Jackson, who has a police record; Emily La Rue, who runs a tea room with her partner Rollo; Phineas V. Lambert, an office clerk; John Wallace, a condemned prisoner; the Marines Steve Gallagher, Mulligan and O'Brien; and Mary Walker, who lives in a rest home.
