Plot summary
John Allen and his flatmate Bud Clark work as riveters on a skyscraper going up, earning $62.50 a week. Bud is engaged, and he keeps arranging dates for John, who is not impressed with the women he is fixed up with. After Bud wins $38 on the horses, the two go out on the town. John leaves the double date and finds a taxi dance hall, where he meets a dancer named Shirley Day. She says she works there to support sick parents on an Idaho farm and that she finished a year of high school. Instead of the lecture he had in mind, she takes him to a speakeasy and gets him drunk on bootleg gin served in teapots, then steers him to a Justice of the Peace.
