Plot summary
Tom survives the shrapnel wound in a German hospital, in severe pain, and the doctors give him morphine pills. After the armistice he comes home in a prisoner exchange. Roger, who was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for the mission, is shocked to see him; Tom shows no wish to reveal what happened, and Roger finds him work at his father's bank. Tom's growing dependence on the morphine costs him the job, and treatment leaves him sober but unemployed. He lands in Chicago, in a room over the diner that Pa Dennis runs with his daughter Mary, begins courting his neighbor Ruth Loring, and is hired as a driver by South Park Laundries.
