Art Carney
Biography
Art Carney was an American actor and comedian who won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and six Emmys and was best known as Ed Norton, the sewer worker opposite Jackie Gleason's bus driver Ralph Kramden on The Honeymooners. Born in Mount Vernon, New York, he worked in radio during the 1940s as a mimic and character actor and sang comic numbers with Horace Heidt's orchestra, and he had his own NBC variety show from 1959 to 1960. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Harry and Tonto (1974), playing an older man on the road with his cat. His later films included The Late Show (1977), House Calls (1978), Movie Movie (1978), Going in Style (1979), Firestarter and The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), The Naked Face (1984) and Last Action Hero (1993). On Broadway he played Felix Unger in The Odd Couple and was nominated for a Tony Award for Lovers.

Behind the award
Carney's 1974 turn as Harry Coombes, an older man traveling with his cat in Harry and Tonto, earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. That year's other nominees were Albert Finney, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino.
First role
Carney's film career started with an uncredited part in Pot o' Gold (1941), the spin-off movie of the radio giveaway show, where he played in Heidt's band. He had sung comedy with the Horace Heidt orchestra.
First role
In 1957, Carney took the lead role in The Rope Dancers, a drama written by Morton Wishengrad, sharing the stage with Siobhan McKenna. It was his Broadway debut.
Beyond film
Carney recorded for Columbia Records in the 1950s, including "The Song of the Sewer" as Norton and a syncopated spoken-word "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" with only a jazz drummer.
