Plot summary
Merchant seaman Tommy Campbell gets a six-month suspension and is stuck in New York City, where he rents a cheap apartment on the Lower East Side and keeps after a supervisor named Karenski for any ship assignment. The corner grocery owner, Abe, agrees to take his phone calls until he has a telephone of his own. Marsha Bernstein, who lives upstairs, visits to apologize for sprinkling him while she watered her plants on the fire escape. At Abe's store, two members of the Souls take groceries and walk out, and Abe does not confront them. The Souls wonder what Tommy is doing in the neighborhood. One night in a subway restroom, gang members beat him and take his watercolor paints, and Marsha nurses him after finding him collapsed in the lobby of the building.
