Plot summary
Charley Nichols is a respected doctor and a new widower. He has been away on a tropical vacation and a period of mourning, and women proposition him. The hospital where he works has a senile chief of staff, Dr. Amos Willoughby, whose primitive contraption is treating the fractured jaw of a patient, Ann Atkinson. Charley frees her, and Willoughby is angry that he stole a patient. Charley and his colleague Dr. Norman Solomon agree the hospital needs a change, but Willoughby has a hold on Charley, who agrees to nominate him for another term as chief. Ann is divorced, a bright conversationalist who bakes and sells cheesecake. Charley likes her company and helps her get work at the hospital, though he is reluctant to commit to one woman.
