Plot summary
Dr. Judd Stevens is a Chicago psychoanalyst and a widower. One of his patients is murdered after a session, stabbed in the middle of the city, wearing a raincoat that belongs to the doctor. Detectives McGreavy and Angeli take the case, and Stevens becomes their prime suspect. McGreavy resents him from an earlier case in which Stevens' testimony sent a cop killer to an institution instead of prison, so his interrogations are aggressive. Stevens keeps telling the detectives he had nothing to do with the killing, and he tells his physician brother-in-law how the police behave toward him. After repeated attempts to convince them of his innocence, he sets out to find the killers himself.
