Plot summary

A brush salesman, Migg Tweeny, arrives in Klopstokia on business and meets a young woman in the street; the two fall for each other immediately. She is Angela, the president's daughter, and in Klopstokia every woman is called Angela and every man George. The country is bankrupt, and the president holds his cabinet in line with his physical strength while those ministers plot to overthrow him. Tweeny, hoping to marry Angela, offers a way out: the president can enter the Olympic weightlifting contest and collect the cash prize Tweeny's employer pays to medalists. Tweeny sets out to assemble a Klopstokian team, finds the country full of remarkable athletes, and boards a steamship for America with them as their trainer, while the ministers work against the trip.
