Plot summary
The choral society of Ramsden, a Yorkshire town, loses its choirmaster to the army in 1916, and most of its male singers go with him. The members appoint Dr Henry Guthrie in his place, uneasy about his atheism, his Germanophilia and his homosexuality. He chooses Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius for the society to perform, a work accepted despite doubts about the composer's Catholicism and its purgatory. With male voices scarce, Guthrie recruits singers from the local pub and from the nearby military hospital.
