Behind the camera
Norman Lear brought Thicke in to produce Fernwood 2 Night and to lead its writing staff. The tongue-in-cheek talk show drew on characters from Lear's earlier series, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.
A role that slipped away
In 1988, Thicke took over as host of the Miss USA Pageant in El Paso, Texas, after Bob Barker stepped down because fur was part of the pageants. That same year he also replaced Barker as host of the Miss Universe Pageant in Taipei, Taiwan.
Big break
Thicke was signed to host Thicke of the Night, an American syndicated late-night talk show, for the 1983-1984 TV season. It was heavily promoted before broadcast as a competitor to NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, but the show was short-lived.
Beyond film
Thicke co-wrote the song "Sara" for Bill Champlin, and it was a solo hit that appeared on Champlin's Runaway album in 1981.
