Plot summary
Eddie Krumble, a widowed contract actor, makes his living as a paid audience member. He and his best friend Chris take seats at infomercial tapings again and again. Eddie is also seeing Judy, a shy gas station attendant. Then Stillerman, a late-night talk show host, notices how often Eddie turns up in the crowd and builds segments around the hunt for a recurring audience member he calls the Clapper. The attention costs Eddie his job, and Judy loses hers as well. Eddie turns down invitations to appear on the show, because the show does not pay its guests.
