Plot summary
Carolina Mirabeau was raised with her two sisters by her eccentric, domineering grandmother Millicent in the countryside. She moves to Los Angeles and keeps in regular contact with the family. Her neighbor Albert Morris, a writer, is her best friend and confidant. Carolina is unlucky in love, never getting past a third date. She screens dating show candidates at a television studio and is fired after a distraction during a broadcast. Heath Pierson, a contestant on that show, asks her to dinner.

- Miramax, the domestic distributor, failed to release Carolina in theaters. After Harvey Weinstein screened it, he promised the producers an MTV blitz over Super Bowl Weekend, but they never heard about it again until it was suddenly released direct-to-DVD in 2004.
- Kathy Bates was cast as Grandma Millicent Mirabeau in Carolina but dropped out after make-up and hair tests because the original production shoot was shut down. Shirley MacLaine stepped in to play the role instead.
