Plot summary
On a family vacation, Todd Dougherty's mother Abby is chased through the woods by a monster and disappears, and everyone except Todd believes she is dead. Six months later Todd is living with his grandparents Shirley and Norman when his father George announces that he is engaged to Denise Gore, a woman he has been dating for those six months. Todd's comic books describe tropopkins, and he sees Denise gnawing on a bone the way a tropopkin does in the comics. She also keeps a small creature in a box, which she feeds a live goldfish. George notices a missing fish and blames Todd.
