Plot summary
Jonas Carson, a scientist, constructs an android that looks like a human teenage boy, adopts him as his son, and lets his daughter Becky name him Chip. The Carsons move to a new town, where Chip enrolls in high school alongside Becky and Carson fills a science teaching vacancy so he can observe how Chip gets along with others. Chip's literal-minded behavior amuses some students and annoys teachers, and he runs afoul of Coach Duckworth. Some classmates befriend him, and a fellow student takes an interest in him. Gordon Vogel, a defense contractor and Carson's former employer, says the android was built with his resources and belongs to him, and he enlists a former colleague of Carson's, J.J. Derks, to find the family.
