Plot summary

Specially ordered software meant to widen Chip's range of facial expressions brings a computer virus with it, and the virus gradually disrupts the android's functions. Chip's adoptive father, Jonas Carson, does not think the android is ready to be on his own, but Becky, his adoptive sister, argues that college is the next stage in his development, and Chip, already signed up for the summer session, goes. Jonas and Becky trail him in a car fitted as a monitoring station. Chip's roommate tries to draw him into campus social life, while Chip's literal reading of ordinary remarks and his lapses push people away. He notices a girl in a lab coat in the science building, and the next day he follows her to the robotics lab and invites her out.
