Plot summary
Herman Broder, a Holocaust survivor, lives in New York in 1949 with Yadwiga, the gentile servant who hid him in a hayloft during the war and whom he took as his wife after concluding that Tamara, the wife he left behind, died in a concentration camp. He lets Yadwiga believe he is a traveling book salesman, though he actually writes for Rabbi Lembeck, and he hides from her his affair with Masha, another survivor, who is estranged from her older husband Leon. Masha wants Herman to divorce and marry her, and he keeps putting her off. Answering an advertisement in a newspaper, Herman learns that Tamara is alive and has reached New York.
