Plot summary
Rob and Chris live at 112 Mercer Street with their infant son Robbie. The appliances in the house are wary of the baby at first, then grow used to him. One night Toaster sees the old Hearing Aid in the attic taking in a signal that seems to come from space. The next night it leaves its drawer again, and Robbie climbs out of his crib to follow it. In the attic a beam of light appears, and the baby is carried off to Mars in the Hearing Aid's place. The appliances ask Wittgenstein, an old supercomputer friend, for advice, then assemble a craft from a ceiling fan, a laundry basket, a microwave and microwaveable popcorn as fuel, with Calculator supplying navigation data. Ratso stays behind to keep the baby monitor from waking Rob and Chris.
