Plot summary
Ray Hughes and Danny Costanzo are Chicago police officers on the North Side, known for wisecracks and unorthodox methods that get results. After their captain orders them to take a vacation, the two enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of Key West, question their careers, and decide to leave the force and open a bar. Back in Chicago they learn that drug dealer Julio Gonzales is free on bail, and they vow to capture him before they retire, this time requisitioning bulletproof vests. Captain Logan adds another task: before they go, they must train their replacements, detectives Anthony Montoya and Frank Sigliano.

- Gregory Hines campaigned persistently for his role in Running Scared, proud that the film showed a black man with sex scenes, unlike the usual black character written as sexless next to a white counterpart.
- Nik Kershaw wrote a song called "Running Scared" for the movie's soundtrack, but it was rejected for reasons nobody explained, and the track ended up on his third album, Radio Musicola.
- The screenplay began at MGM as a story about New York cops who retire, and was reworked into one about young Chicago cops who do not retire, which opened up casting and a new city setting.
