Plot summary
At Mr. Jonathan's, the most successful women's salon on the Sunset Strip, the owner is Jonathan Knight, an African American hairdresser and businessman. He sleeps with his predominantly white clients, and his reputation as a lover makes him sought after for trysts almost as much as for his styling. He is also dating Brenda St. John, the salon's young receptionist. Brenda's former boss and lover, a white mobster, is jealous of her new relationship with Jonathan. He has begun sending men to wreck the salon and to intimidate Jonathan and the staff, and the violence against the salon keeps getting worse.

- A day before Black Shampoo was to start filming, its original director of photography had a car accident. He told Greydon Clark he could still shoot it, but quit on the first day because of the pain, so the gaffer, Dean Cundey, took over.
- Greydon Clark rejected the usual blaxploitation leads, pimps, private detectives and drug dealers, and took his cue from the 1975 hit Shampoo, making his main character a businessman and hairdresser instead.
- Greydon Clark cast John Daniels as Jonathan because of his performance in The Candy Tangerine Man (1975), while Tanya Boyd won the part of Brenda through an audition that impressed Clark.
- Because Black Shampoo was made outside the Screen Actors Guild, many members of its cast were credited under pseudonyms.
