Plot summary
A bank robbery pulls in Scott Roper, the San Francisco inspector the department counts on to talk hostage takers down. He ends the standoff by shooting the robber Earl in the shoulder, and the hostages go free. That night Scott joins Sam Baffett, a friend who was once his partner, to question Michael Korda, a jewel thief in one of Baffett's investigations. Baffett is stabbed, and Scott finds the body in an elevator. Captain Frank Solis keeps Scott off the case because of the conflict of interest, and Scott is paired with a new partner, Kevin McCall, a SWAT sharpshooter. Scott means to bring Korda in himself.

- Eddie Murphy called Metro the most physical role he had done in a movie, and tipped his hat to Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis, saying he did not know how they could do such films all the time because you really get beat up doing them.
